We value cleanliness and privacy. When a food company rents our kitchen, they will have exclusive access in the kitchen to protect proprietary processes, recipes or ingredients.
Minimum monthly rates start at $150 a month. Rates range from $6 - $15/hr based on time blocks. Choose from blocks of 5-hour, 7-hour, or 12-hour shifts. Several different programs to choose from but all of them include long-term dry storage and some can include refrigerator/freezer space (long and short term).
We charge based on your kitchen time, so you are able to package and set-up delivery in other areas of the facility for free (under certain time limitations). Call for details.
No application fee but there is one month’s security deposit required.
Upon signing a contract with us, we will provide 1 hour of FREE business formation and licensing consultation, assisting with the process of getting your company started and obtaining the required licenses to operate your food business. (Please allow up to 2-4 weeks to complete this process prior to establishing legal status for your company)
We are also available for marketing and graphic design assistance at very competitive rates.
Equipment includes large Hobart mixer (60 qt), stackable convection oven, French Top gas range, Baxter rotating double rack oven, microwave, walk-in refrigerator, walk-in freezer, and other small wares. Let us know if you’d like to use one of your machines at our facility.

Logan Square Kitchen will close permanently on Friday, June 28, 2012. We're grateful to our community and every single person that believes that we can heal community with food.
Currently, about 20 active businesses work at LSK. All of them will need to find new kitchens in order to keep their businesses open. All clients will be able to continue to produce until June 28, 2012. We’ll be working to support our clients during this transition, and welcome any information about available Kitchens.
It’s a sad time when our government kills the very things that can heal our City. Logan Square Kitchen was designed to heal the local economy, environment and food system all at once. It was an innovative, bold idea that never had its chance. The Dept of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) began hammering nails in its coffin before we even opened our doors in 2009 and hasn’t stopped. Unfortunately, we see no end to regulatory burdens, which will continue to block our ability to grow a healthy business.
Over and over we heard, “you did everything right.” See the Alderman before building purchase. All City Depts approve us through Green Building Permit Program. Go to BACP in advance of applying for license, completely disclosing the business model. Spend 3 months talking about what licenses we needed. Apply as directed. Told we ‘misrepresented’ our business. Told we can’t have license caused we’ve failed our “furniture inspection.” Correct that, and get licenses contingent on conditions we can’t meet. Then the Zoning folks try to shut us down. 20 health inspections. 18 months wrapped in red tape. Enduring intimidation and harassment, the resources we set aside to ramp up the business were instead used to pay lawyers and our mortgage while we were denied the right to operate.
When our licensing difficulties ceased, they were just beginning for our clients. Before the “helpful” Shared Kitchen Ordinance that took effect Sept 1, 2011, we got clients licensed in a week or two. Of course, we had to be inspected by Health each time. Now, we're the inspections have stopped, but it takes 1-3 months and multiple trips to City Hall. Unfortunately, Mayor Emmanuel’s new ‘streamlining’ of business license ordinance that passed last week does not offer any streamlining for shared kitchens.
It should come as no surprise that we must close. LSK is collateral damage from choices that City employees make each day—people that have lost the ability to connect their actions with the consequences they cause. In all the many, many meetings I’ve had in City Hall in the past three years, there’s a question no one ever asks. “Is it good for our City?”
Logan Square Kitchen has three separate galleys available for use by the hour: two for pastry and baking, and one savory line. The Culinary Studio is a 1900 sq. ft. commercial kitchen facility, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our space is divided into two kitchen areas.
A quick summary of our equipment is listed. The only items we ask our clients to bring are small wares such as utensils and scales, and disposable items (plastic wrap, foil, sheet pan liners, etc).
We can accommodate a wide range of needs, and support growing businesses. Whether its daily production runs or one time catering events for 200+ guests, we have the space.
Getting Started
Before reserving kitchen time with The Culinary Studio, as well as during any use of our facilities, clients must:
Apply for and complete food service plan review and licensure by the Oakland County Michigan Health Division.
Provide proof of an approved Certified Food Service Manager Certification
If producing food items for re-sale you must obtain a Michigan Department of Agriculture Food Establishment License.
Pay your $300 Security Deposit which is refundable.
Sign the latest Operating Agreement with The Culinary Studio, and receive the Culinary Studio Policy Handbook.
Provide proof of product liability insurance coverage with a minimum of $1 million dollars per occurrence and $2 million aggregate, with The Culinary Studio listed as additional insured and maintain such policy for the duration of any kitchen use.

The Starting Block Kitchen and Business Incubator is a nonprofit, regional economic development organization committed to small business development initiatives--for businesses just starting out, or companies outgrowing their current facilities. The commercial licensed kitchens are available 24/7 at affordable rates to help you grow your food production business.
Kitchen rental fees range from $10/hour for tabletop use, to $12/hour for general kitchen use, and $15/hour for use of the stoves, steam kettles, and fillers. Refrigerator, freezer, and dry pallet storage is available for rent--$75/month per pallet for refrigerator and freezer storage or $1.50 per cubic foot/month, and $10/month per pallet for non-secured dry storage.
Certified staff in food handling and equipment operation is available for assistance and training in food production, including measuring pH levels, batching-up recipes, and packaging and labeling.
Each producer needs a Michigan Department of Agriculture Food Establishment License to use the kitchen to make products for sale. On-site kitchen safety and sanitation training is required, as is product liability insurance.
The kitchen is also a USDA establishment and a FDA Food Canning Establishment for acidified foods.
